Screening environmental life cycle assessment of printed, internet based and tablet e-paper newspaper

Project title

Screening environmental life cycle assessment of printed, internet based and tablet e-paper newspaper (2006-2007)

Project description

The aim of the project was to assess the environmental impacts of three product systems: printed, internet-based and tablet e-paper newspapers. The results show that the significant phases of the life cycle differ for the three product systems and that printed and internet-based newspaper with a longer reading time (i.e., 30 minutes/day) had a higher impact than internet-based newspaper with a shorter reading time (i.e., 10 minutes/day) and tablet e-paper newspaper. Key aspects that may affect the resulting environmental performance of newspaper product systems were identified. It was concluded that tablet e-paper has the potential to decrease the environmental impact of newspaper consumption and that more comprehensive assessments of the possible toxicological impacts are needed.
