About us


The Centre is a novel research environment, situated at the main campus of the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. It is a forum for knowledge exchange and collaborative creativity, combining leading expertise from media and communication technology, interaction design, sustainable strategies, environmental systems analysis, social and cultural sciences, architecture and urban planning.

We envision a sustainable society supported by innovative media and communication services.

Mission

Our mission is to enable innovative media and communication services for sustainable practices. The Centre’s overall strategy is to perform interdisciplinary and internationally leading research, creating new knowledge and results that realize our vision. Our strategy is to, in relation to media and communication technology:

  1. develop innovative applications and services that contribute to sustainability,
  2. explore new strategies, methods, tools and business models,
  3. understand and assess economic, social and environmental impacts,
  4. demonstrate how it can be used to improve sustainability, and
  5. initiate a transformation to a society where the technology is used to improve sustainability.

Organisation

The VINNOVA Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Communications was founded in 2007 and is one out of 19 VINN Excellence Centers established by VINNOVA (The Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems).  Hosted at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology with strong ties to the School of Architecture and the Built Environment and the School of Computer Science and Communication, the Centre is embedded in  a strong international research environment.

Partners

The Centre collaborates with industrial and public partners that constitute a diverse mixture of multinational companies, public authorities and smaller organizations. During the second contract period  which lasts for three years (July 2009-June 2012)  the Centre has 13 partners. New partners in phase 2 are the Institute for Future Studies,  Stampen,  Sveriges Television, the City of Stockholm and Regionplanekontoret (Office of Regional Planning).
